Few topics are followed as closely as the wealth of celebrities. Rankings, estimates, speculation about salaries and real estate. But these stories are interesting less because of the numbers themselves than because of a recurring pattern: high income and lasting wealth are two completely different things.
We often read about careers where people earned an extraordinary amount of money in just a few years, yet little remained at the end. And we also read about people with modest incomes who built up considerable wealth over decades. The difference rarely lies in the amount earned. It lies in what happens to the money while it’s there.
Visible consumption says nothing about wealth
The comparison reliably works in one direction only. What’s visible is always the expenditure, never the savings. Everyone sees a new car, but no one sees a well-built investment portfolio. Those who orient themselves toward the lifestyle of others are focusing on a facade, not their bank statement.
For everyday life, this leads to an inconvenient but useful rule: The only thing that can be meaningfully compared is your own figures from today with your own figures from a year ago.
Four principles that are largely undisputed
First, the buffer. Before any investment, three to six months’ worth of expenses are held in a separate, readily available account. Without this reserve, every unexpected bill forces you to liquidate investments at the wrong time.
Diversify your investments. Spreading your portfolio across many companies, sectors, and regions makes you less dependent on a single bet paying off. That’s why broadly diversified index funds are a good starting point for many investors.
Pay attention to costs. One or two percent in ongoing fees sounds harmless, but over thirty years they add up to amounts that are simply missing from your return. The total expense ratio should be checked before every investment is finalized.
Regular rather than sporadic. A monthly savings plan eliminates the question of the perfect entry point. For the vast majority, this is more practical than trying to time the markets.
One thing that should never be overlooked: price fluctuations are normal, past performance is no guarantee of future results, and losses are possible. Money that will be needed in two years should not be invested in the capital market.
Be careful with anything that needs to be done quickly.
Especially in the circles of celebrities and social media, investment products promising high returns in a short time are regularly advertised. A famous face is no guarantee of quality. Anyone who can’t explain an investment in two sentences shouldn’t buy it, regardless of who’s recommending it.
Why women invest less often
Studies have shown for years that women are more likely to leave their money in a bank account. This isn’t due to poorer results; on the contrary, when women do invest, they often do so more calmly and with a longer-term perspective. The hurdle lies earlier, in accessing understandable information and in the feeling that they are actually responsible for the topic.
Things have changed considerably in this area in recent years. Providers like SmartPurse , a Swiss fintech company founded by Jude Kelly and Olga Miler, focus on financial education rather than sales pitches. More than 80 lessons, ranging from three to seven minutes, are available via a free app, along with courses and coaching. The company has received numerous awards, including at the Swiss ETF Awards and during Davos Innovation Week.
The unspectacular part is the crucial one.
The stories that make the headlines are about rapid rises and dramatic falls. In contrast, the kind of wealth building that actually works is remarkably boring: understand what you’re investing in, keep costs low, make regular deposits, and leave it alone for extended periods.
That doesn’t make for a good headline. But it’s the part you can control.
